Oliver Schreiber: Volume for Vanity, Profit for Sanity

367: Oliver Schreiber: Volume for Vanity, Profit for Sanity

Today on Window Treatments for Profit

Today with Oliver Schreiber, CEO of Beltway Blinds and longtime member of Exciting Windows, we’re talking about the real difference between growing a business and growing a profitable one.

Oliver made the leap from home improvement sales into window treatments almost by accident, when a single afternoon of door-knocking landed him sixteen appointments and convinced him to quit his job two weeks later. That door-to-door hustle became the foundation of Beltway Blinds, and Oliver still swears by it today.

But this conversation isn’t just about lead generation. Oliver gets candid about the year his revenue hit almost $11 million and his profit didn’t reflect it. For years he’d been saying, “Volume for vanity, profit for sanity,” until he had to admit that he wasn’t actually running his own business that way.

Oliver shares what changed when he started putting profitability ahead of volume, including hard decisions about his team, overhead and his own role in the company. He also talks about the people and conversations that helped him see his business differently, and why even an experienced, successful business owner still needs the right people around him.

It’s an honest look at what happens when you stop measuring success by the size of the top-line number and start asking what the business is actually producing for you.
